Gond Paintings

Gond art originates in central India in the state of Madhya Pradesh. The Gondis are an  ancient tribe that can be traced back to the pre-Aryan era. Gond art is practiced by Pardhan Gondis, tradition storytellers, geneologists and musicians. The art originated when the women of the tribe began to decorate their homes with these paintings. The Gondis believe that looking at a beautiful images brings luck. Over time all members of the tribe began practicing this art. Paintings were added to walls and floors on festivals and celebrations. They were made with charcoal and limestone initially. The art was discovered by a student of the famous painter J Swaminathan. The student then asked the artist, Jangarh Singh Shyam, to recreate the painting on paper. Jangarh Singh went on to become famous nationally and internationally for his art, and so the tradition of painting Gond art on canvas was born. Today the art form is practiced with acrylic on canvas, silk screen, as drawing and as wall murals. Individual artists develop and practice their own signature styles within the Gond art tradition.

The paintings showcase themes of nature, folklore, mythology and everyday life. They show both real and fantastical woodland creatures, the symbiosis between man and nature and vividly colored trees. The paintings are rife with metaphor borrowing from the oral storytelling traditions of the Gondis. The images themselves seem to come from memory, dreams and imagination.

The graceful earthy forms of the paintings are created by outlining directly in brush and color and filling the forms with signature patterns such as dots and dashes. These striking and thought provoking paintings continue to have an avid following both in India and across the globe.
