Bidri

Bidri is a metal craft practiced by a community of artisans in Bidar, Karnataka. It has also spread to Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh and Aurangabad in Maharashtra with variants being practiced even in Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh.  This art of metalwork was brought to India by the followers of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti. It is said to have flourished under the patronage of the Bhamani Sultans of Deccan, who ruled Bidar during the 14th and 15th century. Several influences, from its origins in Persia, to Turkish and local touches, intermingle in this unique and voluptuous art form. The original Persian art forms it come from, used inlay to decorate steel and copper objects. Zinc, as a base, is only used in India.

It is said that the Second Sultan Aluddin Bahmani invited the Iranian artist Abdullah Bin Kaiser to decorate his palaces. Collaborating with local artists, Kaiser thus gave birth to a new art form. As the art grew in popularity it was passed down generation to generation, surviving long after the demise of the dynasty that originally brought it here.  Today it continues to be practiced by local Muslim artist families and by members of the Lingayat sect.
